Education in America

- A Brief Summary -

While it has been argued that education in America is getting weaker and weaker, I think it is a very debatable subject. Education is available in proportion to the effort put forth by the student. There are students that have excelled from every population center in American and just as many students that have progressed poorly in areas that boast of having the best "magnet" schools. In short, a student will get from school exactly what they put into it. Having said that, here is a little more general information regarding schooling in America:
The levels of school are as follows -

Pre-School
Kindergarten
Elementary School
Junior High School
High School
Secondary Education (College)
Post Secondary Education (Masters level and PhD)

Pre-School - Any period of informal schooling and forming of socialization skills for children prior to attending Kindergarten, generally from the ages of 3 to 5 (this is also referred to as Pre-K).
Kindergarten - Children are eligible to attend Kindergarten if they will turn the age of 5 prior to December 1st in the year which they are scheduled to attend Kindergarten. It is not uncommon for parents who have children who will be turning 5 late in the calendar year to wait until the following year to enroll their children in Kindergarten.
Elementary School - This period of school generally includes grades 1 through 5 (ages 6/7 through 10/11)
Junior High School - Typically this period of school includes grades 6-7-8 and is usually comprised of children from the ages of 12/13 through 14/15. Some schools keep the 6th grade in elementary school, and some keep grades 1-8 in elementary school, but typically junior high is grades 6-7-8.
High School - This period of education includes grades 9-10-11-12. It is in these grades where the terms Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior are applied. These grades are where emphasis begins to be placed on students who are intending on attending college (University) after High School. Most High Schools offer various levels of instruction within a grade level allowing students who desire to attend college to pursue courses designed to better prepare that student for success in the college environment, while also providing courses for students who may desire a vocational (trade) education track or courses for students wishing to join the workforce directly after graduating from High School.
Secondary Education /College - This is where students generally 18 and older will pursue a specific course of education towards what is considered a "professional" track, such as engineering, teaching, medicine, psychology, business, information technology, etc.etc. Students graduating from College are generally awarded a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.
Post Secondary / Graduate School - Students pursuing additional education at this level are generally striving to earn their Master of Arts or Master of Science degree. Beyond the Master level of education is referred to as Post Graduate school and is when the aspiring student is trying to earn the Doctorate level education (PhD).
