Well, after applying for a job with the Census Bureau in April last year, I was rung up in late November and took the test just before I flew to Oz.
They offered me a job twice while I was over there, both for clerks in the local office, and I had to turn them down.
Now that I'm back, they have offered me a job in the office helping the Spanish-speaking applicants. 40 hours a week for 2 months, and I gather I'll be speaking Spanish the whole time! Hope I am up to it!
Pay is a fair bit less than that for field workers, but I guess I won't be bitten by rabid dogs.....

Congrats has it been long since you last worked? If so are you nervous? Look at me wanting to know everything but you don't know unless you ask. They sure did want you didn't they.

Thanks all. I am very nervous, especially after having been out of practice with my Spanish during my recent trip to Oz in Dec-Jan. I haven't worked full-time or for anyone else but myself since before my daughter was born (she's 20), and I have never worked in the US.
The plan has been to get back into the workforce, and this will give me something current on my resume, especially with the Spanish.
I expect that this will be no longer than 2 months or so, as Census day is 1 April.

Congratulations!!
Your Spanish can't be too bad if you got the job...and as everyone else has said...each little job to add to your resume goes a long way.
Very well done, & I'm sure it can't have been easy.

All I did was tick the boxes saying I can read, write and speak Spanish. And reply in Spanish to the job offer message that was left on my answering service in Spanish. !!!
I think they are desperate for bilingual people here in an area where 40% of the population is hispanic.
Gad, what does one pack to take to work these days..... A thermos cup and a Spanish/English dictionary??
