The only thing I can tell you lizzy is not to get a young pony,  especially if your kids are young and never ridden before.  Ponies tend to have the "short man" syndrome.

The main expenses when it comes to horses or ponies is the food supplements they need, vet care which is a must to keep them healthy and also the farrier expenses for their hooves and teeth and grooming is a big MUST, but you can do that yourself.

If it is definitely a pony you want then I would go for a Welsh, but that is just my opinion.

While i agree with Jo i also have to say ive had 2 ponies before one an Appaloosa and he was a rig when i got him, yet he was so beautiful in nature it wasnt funny.
I got a vet out to fix him up only to have the job done but found out it was just that one of his balls hadnt dropped so he wasnt a rig at all when i got him but he ended up being one ha_ha and it never changed him at all.
Then i had a Welsh Mountain i got her as soon as she was allowed to leave her Mum it was hard work and i spent a lot of time with her but she ended up just beautiful, she would come running if she heard my car coming everytime, i use to sit on the fence reading her stories from kids books...yer yer i know but it seemed to calm her down.
So in saying all of this i cant say i have had any bad experience with a pony but a Shetland i would keep away from.

I really don't like shetlands, I was terrified of horses for years because of one of them,  they are mean little SOBs...well I should say the ones I have been around.

Shetlands are mean as, a friend of mine had one when i was younger and that pony would bite you every time.
You could get up on its back if you got past the biting stageh0099, so i agree keep away if young kids that hasn't had horse experience is involved.
