So I get home last night and there's a package on the kitchen counter. I know it's for me, so I read who it's from, my NANA
Now let me just say how awesome my nana is. The woman is 80 years old and even though she calls me by my sister's name sometimes, or even hungs up on me because she can't understand me saying, it's Kelly, she is an amazing woman. My grandfather died from a heart attack about 23 years ago and my nana has been by herself ever since. She never once wanted to date again, her heart belonged to my grandfather. His name is Harry but we called him Bibby. My nana danced her heart out at our wedding, back in 2003, at age 75. She had a few wines and was tearing up the dance floor, everyone was talking about her. I spent a lot of time with her when my grandfather died, I was about 7. My nana has been my rock in my life and I love her dearly for it.
Anyway, back to the parcel. I tear it open and there's a tissue box cover with a small kangaroo and koala, even Jason said it was cool. My nana had also put in there some woolen socks that she had knit for me. Yep, they aren't the most fashionable, but it was made with love. I had a tear in my eyes as I put them on and modeled them for Jason.
I love you and miss you Nana

Nanas just rock. My mums mum passed away some time back and I know she is with me always... My dads mum is in a home and has dementia and didn't know me when I visited last year. It tears my heart out as we had so many fabulous times and talks. Thank god for those times, at least I will remember them and pass the old days down to my kids. We just found out she has an aneurism (sp) and could go at any time. For selfish reasons I hope she keeps keeping on til we are home as I would be devastated not to be able to say goodbye. Nanas just rock!!!

Geez Kell that post really made me teary. What a wonderful story. I hope I am a good Nana to my boys. I know that my daughter had a special relationship with my Mum, they were like soul mates. I miss my Mum and her Mum a lot (both passed), never did get to meet my Dads Mum, she passed when he was 21. You will get to wear those socks soon enough!!! LOL

I never had my grandmothers growing up, or great grandmothers....my mum's mum died when mum was 13, and my father's mother died when I was a baby.
I'm glad Emily gets on so well with my mum...she just doesn't see her very often..

I never knew my Grandparents that well, i wish i did but sad to say they all passed away when i was young or not even born.
I remember a bit about one of my Grandpa's but i think i was 11 when he passed away, he did get married again after my Dads Mum passed away but the lady never felt like a real Grandma to me.

| My Granpa, whose house we lived in passed away when I was about 16, I got home from school as the Ambulance left... I never knew my Grandma, and My Pop on Dads side died when I was about 14, Mum and Dad were already divorced then, and Nana wouldn't have anything to do with us...

You're so lucky to have had a nice nana, Kells.
I had grandmas, and they weren't really interested in us (they had so many grandkids......)
My ex-in-laws made an effort to be good grandparents, but it fell apart when the grog got to them. It will be interesting to see what things my kids remember about them.

You know...that's what's so special about grandmas, grandpa's etc.
They do little things, like knit you socks, out of the goodness of their hearts.
And its so special when we receive them.
These days its more about putting some scratch lottery tickets or something similar in an envelope....anything that's quick & easy.
Its just not the same...it doesn't have that home-style 'love' feeling about it.
You might never wear the socks...but I bet you will never forget them!
And on an edit:
I too never knew my grandparents, but I did have a very elderly aunt, probably the equivalent of a grandma.
She was as poor as a church mouse, widowed, & lived in this tiny little house in Bowral...a cold area.
And whenever I went to visit her, she was always sitting by the fuel stove, either knitting, or mending, socks for her grandkids & nieces & nephews.
I'll always have that image in my mind...her hands were all doubled up with arthritis etc, but she continued knitting those socks!
Now if that ain't love, expressed in its simplest form, what is???
