This is a very premature report, it is only just starting to get light here.
But from reports I'm hearing it was not quite as bad as predicted, in so far as places like Cairns & Townsville pretty much spared of tragedy. Certainly lots of destroyed roofs etc.
The places that copped the centre of it were Mission beach & Tully..and so far the only report from there has been of "devastation"...I don't think there's any lines of communication with those 2 places...so that could well be tragic there.
I know that's bad enough, but the surge wasn't as high as expected. It got downgraded to a cat 4 just after Tully, I believe.
Like I said, this is very preliminary & i'm only going by reports I'm getting on the computer.
There is a page on Facebook that seems to be giving some pretty responsible reports, but of course, its FB after all, so probably best not to believe everything written.:

| Ive just heard a report that its been downgraded to a category3 thank goodness. As Dahls said once they hit land they start to die down unless something keeps on feeding it but generally they do die down and fast. This is of course not taking anything away from them at all!

How on earth did we escape that without injuries?
(well so far at least)
How's this....does this conjure up an image of a tough Aussie woman, or what:
A woman who drove into Cardwell on a backhoe last night says trees and powerlines are down and many houses and commercial buildings in the town have been destroyed or extensively damaged.

It just conjured up a mental image of a hardened, weather-beaten farmers wife, wearing her rubber boots , corks bobbing from her hat & toting a rifle as she rode that thing in there....she was gonna let a bit of wind stop her!

First confirmed death...a young man , 22 I think, who died because of the dangerous fumes from running a generator in an enclosed space...something people were warned against, yet I'm sure many didn't know about.
My condolences to his family...very sincerely, ...yet at the same time I'm still shaking my head in disbelief that there weren't more casualties. But one death is too many altogether.

| it is nown just a rain depression..in Northern Territory, i have to wonder when was the last time that Mount Isa had a cyclone warning.. this was a serious cyclone, and so far there is only one confirmed death, but a couple more are missing, in townsville it was a Catagory 2, even though it crossed much further north, Cairns is lucky it changed course. Today i loaded a semi with a generator that was used to power QE2 hospital while they took the main power offline, they also loaded about 6 other small ones on as well, each capable of running a whole street. Cairns has 34% with power, Townsville has 15%. They say it could be 4 weeks before power is restored to normal in places.
