| Sorry can't help ya with that one Kell, I was married in Australia and had it all done before I came over here many moons ago. But wouldn't mind finding out cuz my passport is still in my married name and would like to change it.

I changed mine to my married name after I was married, but that was before 9/11 and it was just as simple as sending my PP to Washington DC with a copy of my marriage certificate. Now one has to change their name by Deed poll in Australia to do this I believe...

Thats correct, its the only way i know of that you can change the name on your passport as Australia doesn't recognize marriages outside of Australia.

Ok, while on my trip back home, I filed to have my name changed. I had all the paperwork that I needed and extra stuff just incase. I handed everything to the lady and said I need to file this so I can apply for a new passport. She made copies of everything and kept my original birth certificate (thankfully mum still had it). She took my money and said I should receive it in 6-8 weeks. She told me it could be longer because they were posting it internationally. The lady was super friendly, thank goodness.
If anyone needs help filing in Victoria, let me know.

So i have a question:
If you change your birth certificate over into another name where does that leave you with your currant passport?
Do they send you out a new passport as soon as you apply for one or do you have to wait as if you are applying for the first time?
I know this might be taking it a little far but its better to cover everything i think before hand, i remember when i applied for my passport i had to get someone to sign the paperwork saying they knew me for at least 5 years under the name that the passport was to be issued or has that changed as well maybe?

| The new birth certificate has both names on it. It says current name and birth name, maybe I'll take a picture of it and post it. I have heard it's better to file a new passport while it's still valid, so that's what I'll be doing.

Thats good if it has both names on it, it would make having the name changed a little easier to come terms with if you have a problem and i had a problem with it .
