It's been a few semesters since my history class, but I think......(here the wheels turning??) that the snake wrapped around the stick is referred to as the Rod of Asclepius. It is an ancient greek symbol associated with astrology and with healing the sick through medicine.
it was Apollo's son, Asclepius who was a practitioner of medicine, so therefore my guess it that it is Asclepius!
But I could be WAY off.
